Art on the Fox returns to Algonquin
Carpentersville resident David Farber is just one of more than 30 artists to showcase their work this weekend at Algonquin's third annual Art on the Fox fine arts show, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the village's Riverfront Park.
An Artist's Touch: Fine Art Lighting and Why it Matters
Those of us who appreciate art know how much difference the right lighting can make in our ability to appreciate the quality of a piece. Texture, color and technique cannot be fully appreciated unless they are illuminated by natural, full-spectrum lighting. The details in a fine piece of art are precisely what art lovers hold so dear. Why go through the trouble and expense of purchasing something to make your home or office more beautiful when your lighting may potentially detract so much from it? The choices in art lighting vary tremendously, but how that choice is made can determine whether that new painting is art, or just another picture taking up space on your wall.
The world is rarely seen is it actually is. The standard incandescent bulbs found in department stores typically radiate a very yellowed light, dulling colors and diminishing the details of the world they illuminate--they make the world a little uglier, a little more bland and tasteless. Colors cannot be appreciated for what they actually are; gleaming white becomes a dirty, nicotine yellow; blues are dulled and sullied. Though they are often sold under the guise of “art lighting,” short-tube florescent lights are little better, bringing out every last flaw in horrifying detail and lending a sickly and artificial tint to the objects under their glare. The lesson here is that, if you appreciate art, chances are that you are not going to find the lighting you need at your local “super center.”
There are several specifications that one should look for when considering an art light purchase. First, and perhaps most importantly, you should ensure that the light you choose generates as little heat as possible. High-heat bulbs can actually soften or melt certain rendering mediums, destroying or reducing the value of your precious emotional or financial investment. In the case of art prints, the heat generated by inappropriate bulbs can crisp or otherwise damage the paper unless proper measures are taken to ensure otherwise. It is better to avoid high-heat bulbs in the first place.
Choosing a low-glare light is important when you want to show your taste, or your talent, off to the world. Such a light should also be as natural and as close to sunlight as possible, utilizing the full spectrum of light to avoid bathing your work in unnatural colors. Low-glare, natural lighting will make sure that the only thing people see when they look at your artwork is the art itself.
Of the lights on the market that meet these criteria, the Lisbon Art Lamp is among the best. While it easily fits all of the above criteria--low temperature, low glare, and natural spectrum--it has several other advantages as well. The OttLite technology, developed by Dr. John Ott, is extremely energy efficient, providing up to 10,000 hours of light out of a single 10-watt bulb. It also features an adjustable shade that swivels a full 180_, letting you direct the light with a precision unavailable in many other lamps. Its versatility is further improved by its powering options--the Lisbon Art Lamp can be fully installed and wired into your electrical system, or mounted for more temporary use with the plug-in feature. Either way, your artwork will get the treatment that it deserves--glorious, natural illumination in an affordable, energy-efficient package.
